  • Joseph P. Bielawski
Professor, Department of Biology, and Department of Mathematics and Statistics
    Research Interests
My research program is organized around four related themes: (i) microbial phylogenomics; (ii) marine microbial ecogenomics; (iii) statistical modeling of molecular evolution; and (iv) structure, function and evolution of systems level phenotypes. These themes are related to each other through my interest in the process of functional divergence and adaptive evolution.

  • Morgan Langille
Assistant Professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair, Department of Pharmacology
    Research Interests
My research is focused on understanding human-microbial interactions and how that information can be used to improve human health. This includes the development of novel bioinformatic methods for microbiome analysis and the application of these methods to both clinical and animal model studies. In particular, I am interested in drug metabolism by the gut microbiome and how the human microbiome varies with age, diet, and exercise.

  • Alastair G.B. Simpson
    Professor, Department of Biology
    Research Interests
I study the diversity and evolution of ‘protozoan’ eukaryotes that are of particular evolutionary importance, or that inhabit unusual environments. Present work focuses on i) amitochondriate eukaryotes and their relatives, especially the ‘excavates’, ii) Protozoa of extremely saline habitats, and iii) The cytoskeleton of ‘Apusozoa’.

    Research Interests
My current research interests are generally related to molecular biology and evolution of eukaryotes and their genomes. In particular, I am interested in studying how genomes and their physiology evolve as a aresult of radical changes in lifestyle such as the acquisition of parasitic and symbiotic relationships.

  • Erin Bertrand
Assistant Professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair, Department of Biology
    Research Interests
My research is focused on understanding how microbes influence ocean biogeochemistry. I am particularly interested in how micronutritional requirements shape interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria and what the consequences of those requirements are for global biogeochemical cycling. I use quantitative mass spectrometry- based proteomic techniques, along with both field and laboratory experiments, to ask these questions.
